Homemade Hair/Scalp Remedies

Hey there onlooker! Welcome, I'm Jami if you're new around here!!! This blog entry I share DIY hair treatments that I've tried & look forward to try. Hair can be a tricky thing to manage & it's not always easy to find the right product for your hair type. I'm a Hairstylist, I know the struggle hunt to find ideal products & disappointments of them not working out which results in a product hoarding stash or your favorite products discontinuing. Annoying! That's why I'm here to share my knowledge & experience with you! I'll be giving you insight on how you can make your own hair treatments at home with ingredients you can find in your kitchen. If you are Kitchen Witch like me & love concocting, brewing potions then I'm excited to show you just how easy it can be to have beautiful & healthy hair with ingredients you can pronounce & even grow yourself.

When trying out these remedies, please be aware of any allergies. A 24 hour skin test is your BEST FRIEND. I do skin tests when working with hair colour chemicals & I wish with ALL the chemicals that are in styling/protection hair products I wish we could do that same. Products are being recalled all the time with toxic artificial-made chemicals & that FACT IS the Cosmetology Act you don't need to be FDA approved only regulated with majority of chemicals in beauty products other than colour additives. Well, this concerns me on so many levels. RED FLAGS, RED FLAGS! NOT ALL HAIR PRODUCTS INGREDIENTS ARE DESIGNED FOR EVERYONE! Certain or multiply ingredients can causing scalp irritants, clogged follicles that stunt growth production & hair loss. Countless lawsuits! Do you check the ingredients list on your hair products like you do when purchasing food? Most Clients don't. They smell, go by your word & purchase. Simplest way to sell. Sheariously confession... I can't even pronounce ingredients let along understand the full chemistry what goes in to hair products. Yes, I know what elements to avoid selling or purchasing for the retail shelf. But be aware that there is many different names for chemicals & the bad ones you know not to use that can be hidden in plane sight under a different name! I unfortunately don't know all the names...because I can't pronounce them or know the scientific names for ingredients clients are allergic too. Like Soy...glycine max, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, mono-diglyceride, monosodium glutamate...see what I mean??? Brain is on fire overload!!!

Even with natural based products, those can cause allergic reactions too. Reactions to beauty products have drastically increased in that last 20 years & the results are majority women. Contact dermatitis is a leading one & can develop over time using the same product or introduce to a new one. It can develop hours or days after using that products/chemicals. Reactions can appear like a red rash, itchy, scaly skin & in server cases blisters. Then your adding more chemicals to hopefully fix the issues...hamster on the wheel journey. I am VERY interested with more hair science & health knowledge that I have been considering becoming a Trichologist. I am not here to only poo-poo on standard manufacture hair care products. There are vast amount of wholesome brands that are health, cruelty free & environmentally cautious. I believe in the balance of both manufacture & DIY. Know your own limits, do your research, talk to a Professional & skin test. Making your own hair products can be a great way to have more control over the ingredients that you’re using on your hair & scalp.

Here are 10 benefits to making your own hair products:

  • You can customize the ingredients to suit your specific hair type & needs.

  • You can save money by creating your own products.

  • You can ensure that your products are free from any harsh chemicals or additives.

  • You can control the scent of the products.

  • You can experiment & create new concoctions to get the exact results that you want.

  • You can be sure that your products will be fresh & free from preservatives.

  • You can use natural or organic ingredients, if desired.

  • You can avoid buying products in packaging that is not recyclable or environmentally friendly.

  • You can create products without any animal-derived ingredients for a completely vegan-friendly product.

  • Witchy Vibes!!!

I was totally that kid playing with my outdoor kitchen making potions with dandelion's, leaf's, flowers, grass plus pretty pebbles & in the bathtub mixing up all the wash care products, making new senses, colours & then getting in trouble because beauty items are costly. Creating brings a youthful play & exploring excitement. Continue to do what brings you joy & PEACE!!! I have tried many DIY haircare remedies like mayo mask, egg treatments, cooking oils, scalp scrubs, vinegar washes, essential oil mists, cold tea rinse/mists, smoothie masks & CBD scalp treatments. When I get the chance I do want to try Rice Water Rinse. As you read, I'm definitely not that Hairstylist that is against DIY haircare & only promotes professional products. Many DIY are marvelous & well, things like mayo masks I'll skip & try other ways for protein treatments [a lot of washing to get out & the smell...ew!] I am open & see value with both methods of haircare. On another note, I have heard many stories from Guests & their DIY/unconventional experiments that are questionable...Monistat mask & even semen. Yes, you read that right. No harm on their hair is all I will state. 6 years ago, I created my own scalp treatment oil using CBD oil, peppermint oil & castor oil. As a cannabis lover, I am intrigued of the benefits & properties of CBD used topically. I went down the research rabbit hole & found a low source of company's that offer scalp treatments with CBD. So, I made it myself & tried it on Guests that were willing. I didn't sell the oil but shared my recipe & many guests still use till this day. In 2021, I developed a Massaging Scalp Treatment Bar & retailed them. {photo slide below has all the details} They sold out each time I made them, small batch of 24 & had great feedback. To be clear, I have no intentions to further this product into anything bigger than what it has become BUT I don't want to gate keep this great DIY wholesome treatment either.

I got ingredients from many places, Tea shops, Apothecary, Bulk Barn, Pharmacy & Online. The molds I found on Amazon & other tools {bowls, measuring spoons, etc} Thrifted. Now, Sheariously Story Time...quickie Guest asks if that bar can be used on her bush. Yup, the south lands. The Bush Scalp needs to be stimulated too so why not. Of course I tested & I am obsessed. No harsh chemicals & moisturized skin! Plus, I use it as a shave bar too. Silky shave! It's truly a multi-useful bar!
