Finding A New Hairstylist

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Finding a new Hairstylist can be an important decision, as they play a significant role in helping you achieve your desired hair goals. To ensure you find a Hairstylist who aligns with your hair goals, you can follow the checklist I created below in this MANE-tenance Monday Edition.

1. Define Your Hair Goals

Start by clearly defining what you want to achieve with your hair. Do you want a new haircut, a specific hair color, or a particular hairstyle? Having a clear vision of your hair goals will help you communicate effectively with potential hairstylists.

2. Research & Gather Recommendations

Ask your friends, family, acquaintance or even your Hairstylist if she is going on maturity leave, surgery or leaving the industry with hairstyles you admire for recommendations. Additionally, check online platforms such as social media, salon website & review sites for Hairstylists in your area who specialize in your desired hair goals. Read reviews & look at their portfolio or before-and-after pictures to gauge their expertise.

3. Consider Hairstylist Specialization

Look for Hairstylists who have experience & specialize in the specific hair services you require. For example, if you want a specific hair color, find a stylist who is known for their expertise in color treatments or texture of hair. This will increase the chances of achieving your desired results.

4. Check Hairstylist Qualifications & Experience

Look for hairstylists who are licensed & have relevant certifications. Consider their experience in the industry & their track record of delivering quality results. You can inquire about their education, training & any additional courses they have completed to stay updated with current trends & techniques. Don't underestimate new talent Hairstylists as they have so much passion & drive, whereas seasoned Hairstylists can become complacent.

5. Schedule A Consultation

Free or a fee, a consultation is under-utilized & expectations are easily lost. Communication is the key to confident hair. Once you have shortlisted a few Hairstylists, schedule consultations with them. Consultations allow you to discuss your hair goals, ask questions & assess their understanding of your needs. Pay attention to their communication skills, professionalism, knowledge & how well they listen to your preferences.

6. Assess Hairstylists Expertise & Creativity

During the consultation, ask the hairstylist about their approach to achieving your hair goals. Inquire about the techniques they plan to use, the products they recommend & any maintenance requirements. A skilled hairstylist will provide valuable insights & suggest options that align with your goals while considering your hair's health & condition.

7. Discuss Beauty Budget & Availability

Understand the Hairstylist's pricing structure, including the cost of initial services, products & any follow-up appointments or touch-ups. Inquire about their availability, including appointment scheduling & how far in advance you may need to book. Ensure that their services fit within your budget & accommodate your lifestyle.

8. Consider Trying 'Blow-Out' Test

Give a new salon or stylist a trial run. Before recieving a transformation cut or colour, getting a hair wash & blow-ouy is an acceptable way to test the waters before plunging into a high investment.

Great way to see how they work, personality & how the salon functions.

9. Trust Your Instincts

Trust your instincts when making a decision. Consider how comfortable you feel with the hairstylist, whether you feel they understand your vision & if you have confidence in their abilities to deliver the desired results. Building a bond & feeling at ease with your Hairstylist is crucial for a successful long-term relationship.

By following this checklist guide, you can systematically evaluate potential Hairstylists & find one who aligns with your hair goals, ensuring a positive & satisfying self-care experience.
